The complexity of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing often leads to process and quality variations, inefficiencies, and a deterioration in production performance. Due to the complex manufacturing solutions used during production, coupled with an overburdened workforce, extended production times and errors resulting in rework and scrap are commonplace.
With the RADOX® EV-C Single-Core connection system, together with the RADOX® Flex high-voltage cables, HUBER+SUHNER has enabled manufacturers to reduce the effort required when installing a cable harness on an electric vehicle. Designed and developed for heavy vehicles, the solution offers more freedom and flexibility to route and organize the arrangement of high voltage cables in a much more efficient way.
« Typically, large-gauge cables used in electric vehicles are long, heavy and relatively stiff, » said Robert Weirauch, Product Manager, Connection Systems at HUBER+SUHNER. “This leads to long installation times for manufacturers, as it requires intensive manual work to correctly route the high-voltage cables in each corner of the vehicle. The electrification of heavy vehicles has also made difficult operating conditions common. To have an uninterrupted power supply and to keep the high voltage connection systems in place, it is important that the layout and all the fixing points are optimally selected for each requirement”.
The effectiveness and efficiency of high voltage connection systems depend on the correct laying of the cables, the quality of the connectors and solid fixings. As a result of this offer, HUBER+SUHNER has become one of the first to supply a complete and validated connection system for electric vehicles, combining the advantages of RADOX® Flex high voltage cables with the unique EV-C pass-through. Both vehicle manufacturers and system suppliers can incorporate both Flex cables and EV-C to meet their individual design needs. All elements within the system have been validated and released into series production.
“Time to Market (TTM) has always been an important factor for most original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), but this has only become more crucial since the pandemic,” Weirauch continued. “With supply chain disruptions, component shortages and extended lead times, manufacturers need every advantage possible to get their products to market quickly. The use of standard products, such as EV-C with RADOX® Flex cables, can significantly shorten the TTM. In addition, these are extensively validated solutions that meet the latest high voltage automotive standards. Thanks to the new solution, customers can now quickly adapt their existing products to individual heavy-duty vehicle powertrain systems or architectures.”
The Single-Core EV-C connection system, available with RADOX® Flex high voltage cables, is available in a variety of sizes to meet the most common heavy-duty requirements: 50mm270mm2 and 120mm2with 95mm2 to offer once validated.
The solution will be presented for the first time at the Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Technology Expo 2023, which will take place from 23 to 25 May in Stuttgart, Germany.
